Why is there a black residue around the rim of my candle jar?

Because we use natural cotton wicks; it is essential to trim between burns or if the candle has been burning continuously for two or more hours. The wicks should be trimmed to about 7mm from the wax; this will stop the candle emitting carbon which produces the black residue. To remove any black residue simply dampen a piece of paper towel and wipe clean.

How do I stop my candle from ‘tunneling’?

Tunneling is when a candle looks like it is only burning down the middle leaving lots of wax around the edges; more specifically, when the wax does not melt all the way to the edge. To prevent tunneling, you should burn your candle for one hour per inch of container diameter when you first light it. For example, if container is 3 inches in diameter then candle needs to burn 3 hours the first time. If not, the wax will never melt past the first wax pool and thereby cause tunneling.

Why is there is moisture on top of my container candle?

This is called soy sweat. Since soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, it can release excess moisture that it cannot hold. This is typically due to temperature changes. You can leave it or wipe it out with a tissue. Sweat from soy candles won’t affect the burn quality and will generally not show up again after your first burn. For optimum performance of soy candles, please do not put them in direct sunlight.
